Dry Desert
St. Paul's Bible Verse of the Week
He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna... in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

(Deuteronomy 8:3)

NRSV: Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you for your own good, who leads you in the way you should go.

CEB: The Lord your redeemer, the holy one of Israel, proclaims: I am the Lord your God who teaches you for your own good, who leads you in the way you should go.

The NRSV is the New Revised Standard Version, which is the academic standard for biblical translation. The Common English Bible is a more accessible translation. Both are approved for use during worship in the Episcopal Church.

Book of Common Prayer: Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.*

CEB: Lead me in your truth—teach it to me—because you are the God who saves me. I put my hope in you all day long.

*The verse number in the Book of Common Prayer is 25:4. (Psalm verse numberings differ by translation.)

NRSV: If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you.

CEB: But anyone who needs wisdom should ask God, whose very nature is to give to everyone without a second thought, without keeping score. Wisdom will certainly be given to those who ask.
